Submission of Kanum Indigenous Peoples Recognition Documents

Source : PPC InstagramMERAUKE — On 26 August 2026, the Kanum Tribal Chief, together with Kanum elders and community representatives, formally submitted the required documentation for the recognition of the Kanum Indigenous People to the Recognition Committee at the Merauke Regency Community and Village Empowerment Office (DPMK).
The submission was undertaken with the support of Papua Paradise Center (PPC), Yayasan Menoken Membumi MemBUMMA (Y3M), and Mitra BUMMA as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the formal recognition and protection of Indigenous Peoples' rights in Merauke Regency.
The event commenced with remarks from the Kanum Tribal Chief, who outlined the purpose and significance of the submission. The required documentation was then officially handed over to the Recognition Committee for review in accordance with the applicable administrative procedures and legal framework.
This submission marks an important milestone in the recognition process of the Kanum Indigenous People. Beyond fulfilling administrative requirements, it reflects the active participation and leadership of the Kanum community in securing legal recognition of their identity, customary institutions, and collective rights.
The recognition process is expected to contribute to stronger protection of Indigenous Peoples' rights, support inclusive governance, and promote the preservation of the Kanum community's cultural heritage, traditional knowledge, and customary governance systems for future generations.
