Honoring Indigenous Lifeways for a Regenerative Future.

“Mitra” translates to “Partner,” and “BUMMA” means “Indigenous Peoples’ Enterprise” in Bahasa Indonesia, the country’s official language. Mitra BUMMA proudly partners with indigenous tribes in Indonesia, supporting their essential role in nurturing the world's forests and the remarkable biodiversity within them.

Launched in August 2022, Mitra BUMMA is fiscally sponsored at PT Fajar Wana Indonesia, the for-profit arm of Forest Watch Indonesia.

Indonesia's rainforests are the world's third largest and are essential in addressing the climate crisis.

Although Indigenous Peoples comprise less than 5% of the global population, they safeguard 80% of the Earth’s biodiversity.

Despite their significant contributions, indigenous and local communities receive less than 1% of international climate finance for forest management.

Our Solution

We partner with Indigenous tribes in Indonesia to establish their own Indigenous-owned Enterprises (BUMMAs) based on the framework developed by the world's largest Indigenous Peoples membership organization, AMAN.

The BUMMAs developed serve as the mechanism for each tribe to secure and manage their territories.

By developing governance and business structures that are collectively owned and managed by each tribe, BUMMAs serve as a practical solution to simultaneously address Indigenous Peoples’ sovereignty and climate change.
